Boot or shoe style skates...which one?

Back when I was on quads, my skates were the boot style. I don't remember them having a heel like I see on today's models. It was just flat boot on a chasse.

The styles I see now are boot and shoe types onto a skate platform. Is there any advantage of one over the other? I am trying to get into roller derby and need your advice oh learned people
